Rotary Golf and Glamour Tournament
Chair: Anne Bermingham
Summary: Our primary goal is to raise money for our club through this fun one-day “Golf & Glamour” event. The event is going into its fifth year and takes place in late May each year. The event was started in an effort to create something different than a traditional golf tournament in order to ensure we had a unique product that sponsors and golfers wanted to be associated with – year over year. It was hoped that it would raise more than many golf tournaments are able to do in one day. There are few “women only” events like this one. It has consistently raised $15,000 for our club. With more volunteers helping on our committee, it has the potential to raise at least $25,000 so that our club can direct funds to both local and international activities.

What happens at the Golf and Glamour day? In 2012, we hope that more than 150 professional women arrive early in the morning to a golf club (in the past the event has taken place at Flamborough Hills). Many of the women may be playing golf for the first time ever or the first time this year. Each person plays nine holes of golf. Then they come back to the club house by 11a.m. – for a spa treatment (massage; manicure; facial), some shopping in a number of boutiques and some networking. Then everyone gathers for lunch – more networking and some unique prizes. Last year – prizes included “most unique swing”; “most colourful language” and even best drive (based on skill manipulating golf cart). It is a lot of fun – and the vast majority of women are getting one of their first ever glimpses at the world of Rotary.

What might I be asked to do if I join the committee? We need LOTS more people to help us secure golfers for the event. We need people to help us find sponsors and follow up on existing sponsors. We need people to help us find boutiques and spas to participate. You do not need to be a woman to help at this event. Male Rotarians also help out prior to the event and on the day itself. All are welcome to lend a hand. Our committee is assisted by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce – they do all our registration, invoicing for sponsors, develop brochures and other such event management tasks – so no one on the committee gets burdened with all of those time- consuming activities.

At present – our committee is made up of many non-Rotarians (friends of Rotary) and a few Rotarians from our club. We need at least five more committee members from our club to make this event highly successful. The committee meets about once a month from October until March – then we meet every two weeks for the two months preceding the event.
